Emerging from a humongous building made from the stem of a bright green, funnel-shaped mushroom, a tall, large-headed mushrum strides toward us. Covered in colorful dangling cloth and jangling with charms and jewelry, this mushrum looks like some kind of leader, or an elder.

“We have to communicate with them.” I step forward, startling the mushrum guards, who rally around me, waving their pole arms.

The mushrum elder thumps their staff, and all the ornaments jingle. “You… are betrayers of the laws that are ruling the Mushrum Kingdom. Devouring our children is what you tried to do.” The elder’s voice is deep, but muddy and muted, like they’re talking through a wall.

“You can speak our language!” I exclaim.

“Speaking your language is something we can do easily, yes,” the elder replies. “Devouring you will now be your punishment.”

“Wait, wait, wait!” I cry out, and wave my hands wildly. Anything to buy us time. “We didn’t eat your children. That was just a misunderstanding! We thought they were normal mushrooms. You know, like to eat? You know, like in a salad!”

“A salad is what we are not,” the elder says flatly. “But you are being soup. So says the law.”

The mushrum guards grab us by the arms and march us toward a boiling cauldron. Steam blasts our faces, so hot that we have to turn away. Oggie and Daz struggle to get free, but too many mushrums keep them from escaping. Mindy, on the other hand, is practically catatonic! She’s just standing there, eyes darting back and forth like her brain is in overdrive.

“Wait,” I plead. “One last request.”

“Last requests are not being granted,” the elder replies. “Devourers from above you are! No better than the terrible beast… the one that is called Zarakna’rawr!”

All the mushrums gasp at the sound of the name Zarakna’rawr.

“Zarakna’rawr?” I ask, but when I do, the mushrums gasp again. “Oh! You must mean the gwarglebeast!”

“Zarakna’rawr,” says the elder. “Terror of the Mushroom Maze. Devourer of mushrums. Devourer of goblins and dweorgs! Zarakna’rawr the Destroyer!” The ornamental jewels jingle as the elder raises their arms. “Now, silence.”

The mushrums hush and drive us up the stepladder toward the mouth of the boiling pot.
